In a historic ceremony, Narendra Modi was sworn in for a record-breaking third term as Prime Minister of India. The event included members from various parties within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), highlighting the BJP’s appreciation for its allies.
Modi Matches Nehru’s Legacy
At 73, Modi has achieved what only India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, could before him: winning three consecutive general elections (2019, 2024). This solidifies Modi’s enduring popularity and the BJP’s strong position in Indian politics.
Balancing Experience and Alliances in the Cabinet
Following the ceremony, seasoned politicians like Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Nitin Gadkari were re-appointed as Cabinet Ministers. Key figures like Nirmala Sitharaman also kept their positions, ensuring stability and expertise in critical roles.
Strategically, Modi included parliamentarians from NDA partners in recognition of their contributions. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the BJP in Andhra Pradesh, where the NDA performed exceptionally well, secured two cabinet positions each. This included Ram Mohan Naidu and Pemmasani Chandrashekhar from the TDP, H.D. Kumaraswamy from the JD(S), and Sarbananda Sonowal from the BJP.
NDA’s Election Results
While the NDA comfortably won 286 seats in the recent elections, the BJP’s individual tally of 240 fell short of a majority (272 seats). This represents a decrease from their previous victories of 303 seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014.
Global Recognition at the Ceremony
Leaders from seven South Asian and Indian Ocean nations attended the ceremony, highlighting India’s growing importance on the world stage. Their presence underlines the significance of strengthening regional partnerships and collaboration.
Looking Ahead
As Modi begins his third term, the country awaits the complete cabinet composition and the allocation of key portfolios. The blend of experienced leaders and new faces from alliance parties suggests a government prepared to address upcoming challenges and guide India towards a prosperous and inclusive future.
