The music world is mourning the loss of legendary ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, who passed away at the age of 72 after battling a prolonged illness. Born in Jetpur, Gujarat, in 1951, Udhas’ musical journey began in a family deeply rooted in music, particularly influenced by his elder brother, renowned playback singer Manhar Udhas.
While initially dabbling in Bollywood playback singing and Indian pop, Pankaj Udhas found his true calling in ghazals, a form of Urdu poetry set to music. In 1980, he released his debut ghazal album, “Aahat,” marking the start of a remarkable career spanning over 40 years.
Udhas’ melodious voice and profound understanding of ghazal poetry resonated with audiences across generations, helping to popularize the genre beyond traditional enthusiasts. Hits like “Chitthi Aai Hai” (Naam, 1986) and “Aa Gale Lag Ja” solidified his position as one of India’s foremost ghazal singers.
We mourn the loss of Pankaj Udhas Ji, whose singing conveyed a range of emotions and whose Ghazals spoke directly to the soul. He was a beacon of Indian music, whose melodies transcended generations. I recall my various interactions with him over the years.
