The nation is rejoicing as the auspicious festival of Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, unfolds with devotees from all walks of life coming together to celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, revered as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Each year, this festival is observed on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha during the month of Shravana in the Bhadrapad. In the year 2023, Janmashtami is a two-day celebration, spanning September 6 and 7. This festival is marked with great enthusiasm by Hindus across the country.
However, the cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where Lord Krishna was born and spent his formative years, hold the most extravagant Janmashtami celebrations. Devotees flock to temples, adorn their homes with flowers and oil lamps, offer prayers to Lord Krishna for his blessings, observe fasts, and install idols of the young Krishna, known as Bal Gopal, in their homes.
According to Drik Panchang, Janmashtami falls on September 6 (Wednesday), while the festivities of Dahi Handi will commence on September 7 (Thursday). According to Vedic chronology, this year marks the 5250th birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. Legend has it that Lord Krishna was born to vanquish the demon King Kansa and end his tyranny. Kansa, who happened to be Devaki’s brother, incarcerated her and her husband in a prison and mercilessly eliminated their offspring. However, during the birth of their seventh child, Balrama, the fetus mysteriously shifted from Devaki’s womb to Princess Rohini’s.
Upon the birth of their eighth child, Krishna, the entire palace fell into a deep slumber. Vasudev, Lord Krishna’s father, managed to escape with the infant Krishna to the home of Nand Baba and Yashodha in Vrindavan. He exchanged Krishna with a baby girl and returned to Kansa’s palace. When Kansa attempted to slay the infant, she transformed into Maa Durga and forewarned Kansa of his impending doom. Thus, the day Lord Krishna was born came to be celebrated as Krishna Janmashtami. These joyous celebrations span two days.
