If you notice tiny dark or grey dots around your nose, cheeks or chin, you may assume they are blackheads. But not every visible pore is a blackhead.
They could actually be sebaceous filaments—a normal part of your skin that helps move oil to the surface. Knowing the difference can help you choose the right skincare approach.
What Are Sebaceous Filaments?
Sebaceous filaments are natural structures inside your pores. They contain sebum, along with dead skin cells and other materials, and help move oil toward the skin’s surface.
They are especially noticeable in areas that produce more oil, such as the nose, forehead and chin.
They usually look like tiny, flat dots that are light grey, yellowish or slightly darker than your skin. They are generally quite uniform in size and are not usually raised or inflamed.
Most importantly, sebaceous filaments are completely normal. You cannot permanently remove them because they are a natural part of how your pores function.
What Are Blackheads?
Blackheads are a type of non-inflammatory acne. They develop when a pore becomes clogged with excess oil and dead skin cells.
When the material inside the pore is exposed to air, it undergoes oxidation, giving it a dark appearance. This is why blackheads look black—not because the pore is filled with dirt.
Blackheads are usually more noticeable, darker and less uniform than sebaceous filaments.
How Can You Tell the Difference?
Sebaceous filaments are usually small, flat and fairly uniform. They often appear as tiny greyish or yellowish dots, particularly on the nose.
Blackheads tend to look darker and more defined. They are caused by a clogged pore and may appear as individual dark spots rather than an even pattern across the skin.
Another important difference is that sebaceous filaments naturally return after being removed, because they are part of the pore. Blackheads, on the other hand, can often be treated and reduced with the right skincare routine.
Why Are Sebaceous Filaments More Visible on the Nose?
The nose often contains many sebaceous glands and can produce more oil than other parts of the face. As a result, sebaceous filaments can become particularly noticeable in this area.
They may appear more prominent when your skin is oily or when there is increased sebum production.
How Can You Manage Sebaceous Filaments?
You don’t need to completely eliminate sebaceous filaments. Instead, the goal should be to make them less noticeable while keeping your skin healthy.
Use a Gentle Cleanser
A gentle cleanser can remove excess oil, sweat, dirt and sunscreen without unnecessarily irritating or drying the skin.
Try Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that can help loosen excess oil and dead skin cells inside pores. A suitable low-strength product can be useful for people with oily or congested skin.
However, using too much can cause dryness and irritation, so it’s better to introduce it gradually.
Use a Lightweight Moisturizer
Oily or combination skin still needs hydration. A lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer can help support the skin barrier without making the skin feel excessively greasy.
Avoid Squeezing
Squeezing sebaceous filaments may temporarily remove some of the material, but the pores will naturally refill. Aggressive squeezing can also cause redness, irritation and skin damage.
How Are Blackheads Treated?
Blackheads can often be managed with ingredients such as salicylic acid and retinoids, depending on your skin and the severity of the acne.
Consistency is more important than using several strong products at once. If blackheads are persistent, widespread or accompanied by other forms of acne, a dermatologist can recommend an appropriate treatment.
Sebaceous filaments and blackheads may look similar, but they are not the same thing. Sebaceous filaments are normal structures that help move oil through your pores, while blackheads are clogged pores and a form of acne.
You don’t need to wage war against every tiny dot on your nose. A gentle skincare routine, appropriate pore-clearing ingredients and avoiding excessive squeezing can help keep your skin looking smoother and healthier.
