OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the immensely popular artificial intelligence chatbot that made headlines with its rapid rise, has witnessed a decline in monthly website visits for the third consecutive month. While the downward trend persists, there are indications that this decline may be stabilizing, as reported by analytics firm Similarweb.
Global desktop and mobile website visits to the ChatGPT platform dipped by 3.2% in August, settling at 1.43 billion visits, following a roughly 10% drop in each of the previous two months. Additionally, the average time spent by visitors on the website has been dwindling since March, with the average duration falling from 8.7 minutes to 7 minutes in August.
However, there is a silver lining as August saw a slight uptick in worldwide unique visitors, with numbers rising from 180 million to 180.5 million users. The return of students to school in September might contribute to a resurgence in ChatGPT’s traffic and usage, with some educational institutions already embracing the technology. Notably, US ChatGPT traffic experienced a slight increase in August, coinciding with the reopening of American schools.
David F. Carr of Similarweb, who regularly monitors ChatGPT and its competitors, noted, “Students seeking homework help appears to be part of the story: the percentage of younger users of the website dropped over the summer and is now starting to bounce back.”
ChatGPT burst onto the scene, igniting a frenzy of generative AI utilization in everyday tasks, from editing to coding. It achieved a remarkable milestone by amassing 100 million monthly active users in January, a mere two months after its launch. Generative AI technology leverages past data to generate fresh content, such as essays or poems. Prior to Meta’s Threads launch, ChatGPT held the distinction of being the fastest-growing consumer application ever and currently ranks among the top 30 websites globally.
As ChatGPT navigates this period of fluctuating user engagement, its continued influence in the world of artificial intelligence and everyday applications remains a topic of keen interest.
