WASHINGTON – The White House has appealed to Congress to rapidly pass a short-term funding measure aimed at avoiding a potential partial federal government shutdown slated for October 1st. This move comes as negotiations for more extended spending plans remain in progress.
An Office of Management and Budget (OMB) spokesperson conveyed, “It’s evident that a short-term continuing resolution (CR) will be required next month. OMB is offering Congress the technical support needed to prevent significant disruptions to government services during the initial quarter of the fiscal year.”
The looming expiration of current funding for the majority of government programs on September 30th has triggered concerns about possible severe disruptions in government functions should no action be taken before the onset of the new fiscal year.
The initial report on the OMB’s comments was made by The Washington Post, highlighting the immediate necessity of a stop-gap spending bill. This bill, which may extend into late November or early December, has been widely expected for several months, given Congress’s difficulties in passing the 12 funding bills required to sustain federal programs. With the deadline just weeks away, the Republican-led House of Representatives has succeeded in approving only one of the 12 bills. Traditionally, spending and tax measures originate in the House before advancing to the Senate.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recently announced reaching an agreement with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on a stopgap measure, indicating bipartisan cooperation to prevent a government shutdown. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell shared his anticipation of a short-term congressional resolution, likely extending into December, as lawmakers strive to determine the government’s spending levels. The pressing call for short-term funding underscores the need for Congress to act promptly and in unison to ensure the continuous operation of vital government services.
