Stuffed grape leaves, also known as dolmas or dolmades, are a classic dish in Mediterranean cuisine, beloved for their savory and aromatic flavors. Made with tender grape leaves wrapped around a flavorful filling, these little parcels are not only delicious but also versatile and perfect for any occasion. Here’s how to make your own Mediterranean stuffed grape leaves at home:
Ingredients:
- 1 jar of grape leaves (or fresh grape leaves, if available)
- 1 cup of rice
- 1/2 cup of chopped onions
- 1/4 cup of chopped fresh parsley
- 1/4 cup of chopped fresh dill
- 1/4 cup of pine nuts
- 1/4 cup of currants or raisins
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup of olive oil
- Juice of 1 lemon
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- If you’re using jarred grape leaves, remove them from the jar and rinse them under cold water to remove any excess brine. If you’re using fresh grape leaves, blanch them in boiling water for a few seconds, then rinse them under cold water.
- In a large bowl, combine the rice, chopped onions, parsley, dill, pine nuts, currants or raisins, minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
- Place a grape leaf flat on a work surface, vein side up, and spoon a small amount of the rice mixture onto the center of the leaf, near the stem.
- Fold the bottom of the leaf over the filling, then fold in the sides, and roll it up tightly into a small parcel.
- Repeat with the remaining grape leaves and filling mixture until all the filling is used.
- Place the stuffed grape leaves in a large pot, seam side down, packing them tightly together to prevent them from unraveling during cooking.
- Pour enough water over the grape leaves to cover them, then place a heavy plate or lid on top to weigh them down and keep them submerged.
- Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer the grape leaves for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the rice is cooked and the grape leaves are tender.
- Once cooked, remove the grape leaves from the pot and let them cool slightly before serving. You can enjoy them warm or at room temperature, drizzled with a little extra olive oil and lemon juice if desired.
These Mediterranean stuffed grape leaves are perfect for serving as an appetizer, side dish, or light meal. They’re packed with flavor and nutrients, making them a delicious and healthy addition to any menu.
